Dissertation involved studying the role of homeodomain protein kinase -1(hpk-1) in C. elegans aging and stress response. hpk-1 encodes a dual specificity serine threonine kinase that has broad functions in cellular growth, proliferation and mediating stress signals in mammals. However, little is known about its molecular functions and mechanisms in C. elegans. An epistasis study previously done in the lab, identified hpk-1 as one of the genes which acts in hsf-1 pathway to influence aging. The overall goal of the project was to understand the biology of how this gene acts to influence worm aging and heat shock response. My thesis work elucidated novel role for hpk-1 in aging via maintenance of protein homeostasis through two distinct mechansims. First, HPK-1 positively modulates HSF-1 (Heat Shock Transcription Factor 1) to promote gene expression of chaperones that mitigate toxic effects of proteotoxic stress and second, HPK-1 activity is essential downstream of TORC1 (Target of Rapamycin Complex 1) inhibition to promote autophagy that has also been linked with clearance of protein aggregates. Using extensive genetic and molecular experiments, I was able to show essential roles for hpk-1 in normal as well as TORC1 mediated longevity.

Responsibilities included teaching basics of methodologies such as protein expression, microscopy and Bioinformatics as well as grading lab write ups, quizzes and holding workshops.
Judge for New York State Science and Engineering Fair (held in April 2017) – volunteered to judge posters from high school students to select research work to be chosen for representing NY at the International Science and Engineering Fair
